Deer season and most other hunting seasons are over by March here in Oklahoma. It’s the time of year that gets Oklahoma outdoorsmen thinking about two things.

Turkey hunting and fishing!

And when thinking about fishing, Spoonbill (Paddlefish) are at the top of a lot of those lists! Sure, we don’t discount the great White Bass fishing in Oklahoma, or the awesome Crappie fishing or even the Oklahoma turkey season which rivals Oklahoma Deer season in terms of popularity.

Spoonbill can be caught in many places in Eastern Oklahoma. But in this article, I’m going to throw out there the best places to catch spoonbill in Oklahoma in my opinion. See if you agree with my assessment.

Where Are The Best Places To Catch Paddlefish In Oklahoma?

Okay, let’s get this list rolling! These are my favorite places to snag spoonbill in Oklahoma. Since they’re mainly a vegetarian fish, snagging is the only way to consistently catch spoonbill!

So here are my favorite spoonbill snagging spots, in order that I fish them.

Fort Gibson Dam

Without a doubt, I believe the tailwaters below Fort Gibson Dam are some of the best spoonbill snagging Oklahoma has to offer!

Best hookup in galena illinois hotels. I first experienced this back in the early ’90s. It was July 4th weekend. There had been huge storms up in Kansas and all that water eventually made its way down. The Corps of Engineers had many of the flood gates open and the fishing was terrific!

Our method of snagging paddlefish from below Ft. Gibson lake was from a boat tied up to the cable. We caught a lot of Spoonbill that weekend, the heaviest right at 97 pounds!

While I’ve snagged Spoonbill there many times since then, I’ve never experienced it as good as it was that first time.

You can also snag Spoonbill from the bank below Ft. Gibson Dam. I’ve seen them caught from both sides when there are some flood gates open. If no flood gates are open, then your only hope is that the turbines on the East side are running.

Like with many tailwaters, take a lot of sinkers and hooks, because Ft. Gibson dam requires a sacrifice from you for allowing you to fish below her mighty walls holding back the lake!

If you’re driving to Fort Gibson Dam from a long way off, be smart and check to make sure some water is moving. You can check the Corps of Engineer’s website here.

Near

Oologah Dam

Another tailwater area with excellent snagging Spoonbill is the Oologah dam.

I don’t seem to get hung up and broke off here as much as I do at Fort Gibson. But still, you’ll want to take along lots of extra tackle.

I prefer to snag off the Eastside, below the boat ramp. Others will get closer to the dam itself. I’ve seen people do pretty well on the other side along the rip rap as well. Give several areas a try or just sit and watch where people are catching Spoonbill.

Be careful how you cast. It’s not uncommon to cast from bank to bank below Oologah Dam. You certainly don’t want to hit someone on the far side with a sinker and snagging hook!

It has been my experience, that if you show up and no water is running, you might as well go back home or fish for something else.

You can check before you go by going to the Corps of Engineers Oologah Lake website.

Here are driving directions to the Oologah Dam.

Low Water Dam On The Neosho River

Lots of Spoonbill are caught here each year. Probably not as popular with a lot of people simply because it’s surrounded by Spoonbill meccas like Ft. Gibson and Oologah.

But the locals like it that way! It means more fishing for them!

The Low Water Dam on The Neosho River is located just West of Locust Grove. If you need driving directions, I’ll have them below.

This is another spot that can be hit or miss. If the water flow is slow to non-existent, fishing is going to suck. You need a good amount of water flowing there to bring the Spoonies up the river!

This is another area where you’d better have some extra tackle on hand. The rocks below the dam will exact a price should you get careless.

Also, if you plan on snagging paddlefish from a boat here, be very careful. It seems like every year or two, someone loses a boat due to the current. It can look deceivably slow. Be prepared to lose a few anchors as well if you get too close!

If you want to check conditions before you head off to the Low Water Dam on the Neosho River, give the Low Water Dam Store a call. Their number is (918) 479-4880 (at least that’s the last number I have for them!). They also carry a lot of tackle you need, whether you’re snagging Spoonbill or fishing for catfish from the bank.

Miami Park on the Neosho River

If you haven’t guessed it yet, the Neosho is full of Paddlefish! Far in the upper right corner of Oklahoma is Miami. The Neosho River runs right through the edge of town there, and it is a popular place to snag spoonbill.

You know when the paddlefish are running in the Neosho at Miami Park. The banks will be lined with people! It’s a very popular place, so plan on getting there early for a good spot. Some of the locals have their favorite places and a few tend to believe they have a claim on certain spots because “I’ve fished this spot for years.”

If it was something besides the crowds I’m not real fond of at Miami Park, it’s the banks. They can be pretty steep. If you can’t get someone to help you land your fish, it can be trying to say the least. Fortunately, there are usually a few people willing to get their feet wet to help someone get their fish up on the bank.

Grand Lake

Eufaula Best Places To Hook Up

If the surrounding dams aren’t running water but you still have an urge to snag some Paddlefish, then take a look at Grand Lake. In my opinion, it can be one of the best places to snag Spoonbill from a boat.

The typical setup is using multiple rods and running around 100ft of line out the back. Obviously, you’ll have a snagging hood and weights tied on.

There are several guides who will be more than happy to take you out snagging for Paddlefish. The area around Sailboat Bridge is one popular spot. If you know how to use a fish finder, you can search for them first before putting out the lines.

Kaw Dam

One of the furthest places West that I know of to snag Paddlefish is below Kaw Dam in North Central Oklahoma. This is the Arkansas River that eventually flows into Keystone Lake.

As with other tailwater fishing areas, Kay Dam is only good if they’re releasing water. If no water is running, fish for Catfish or something else.

Snagging for Spoonbills below Kaw can get a little crowded. It seems some people have no manners and do not mind getting shoulder to shoulder with you. That’s fishing I suppose. It’s the price we pay for a chance at one of these monster fish!

The gear needed to catch Paddlefish below Kaw is like it is any other place. A large sinker and a big treble hook. Throw it as far as you can, let it sink to the bottom and retrieve it with long sweeps of the rod. Not rocket science!

What Kind Of Tackle Do I Need To Snag Paddlefish?

I’ve seen people snag paddlefish with everything from a 5′ rod with a Zebco 888 to a 15′ surf rod with a $500 offshore reel attached.

But it’s been my experience, that a good 10′ surf spinning rod matched with a quality spinning reel is just about ideal for snagging spoonbill from below dams!

I use the Okuma 10′ Surf Spinning Rod and it works great for snagging. It also doubles as a great rod for fishing from the bank for catfish.

The best prices I’ve found have been on Amazon –> Okuma 10′ Surf Spinning Rod

Why a Spinning Reel and Not a Casting Reel?

Several reasons. For someone who doesn’t fish often, a spinning reel is easier to use without the possibility of a backlash.

But more importantly, a spinning reel has a larger diameter spool and can take the line up much faster than a casting reel. That is important once you make that long sweep and then reel up trying to catch up to your sinker and hook.

What Kind of Rod Do I Need To Snag Paddlefish?

Like I said, I prefer a 9 to 10′ surf spinning rod. The one I like the best is a Okuma Longitude 9′ or 10′ surf spinning rod. These are lightweight surf spinning rods that are very durable. This is important when throwing and sweeping all day!

They are tough rods that will hold up for years if you take care of them. Expect to pay around $60 for them. I’ve had more expensive rods that failed me. You just can’t beat the Okuma Longitude surf spinning rods for snagging Paddlefish in Oklahoma.

What Reels Are Best For Snagging Spoonbill in Oklahoma?

I’ve used $25 surf spinning reels from Walmart all the way up to Shimao spinning reels that cost over $200.

While I really don’t have a favorite spinning reel for snagging, the one I seem to pick up the most is an Okuma ABF-65 Avenger. It holds plenty of line (something like 320 yards of 20lb mono line) and six ball bearings and 1 roller bearing. It is a handful and if you plan on making a lot of day trips, you might want to look at a slightly smaller reel that doesn’t weigh as much.

Expect to pay around $65 for the Okuma ABF-65 Avenger surf spinning reel.

As with a lot of other things, Amazon seems to have the best prices. Click here to check the current price on an Okuma ABF-65B.

A lightweight surf spinning reel that is lightweight but still holds around 200 yards of 20lb line is a Penn Pursuit III reel in either the 3000 or 4000 model.

I think the drag on the Okuma ABF-65b is better. But I do use the Penn Pursuit II and III for catfishing from the bank as well as Striper fishing below dams.

Can Baitcasting Reels Be Used To Snag Paddlefish?

Sure they can. It just takes more work reeling up the slack line.

I snagged spoonbill below Ft. Gibson on more than one occasion with an ABU GARCIA 7000. While the reel was more than enough for paddlefish, it seemed my arms would fall off when retrieving slackline after a long sweep!

What Kind of Terminal Tackle Do I Need for Paddlefish?

I like to use a 6 or 8 oz weight when fishing below dams that are running water. If the current is really fast, I may go up to a 10 or even 12 oz sinker.

As for the line, any good quality line will be fine. Personally, I don’t care for braided line. But I know a lot of people who do. I prefer mono in either a Berkley Big Game or Suffix.

As far as hooks for snagging Paddlefish, that’s almost a personal preference. Some people use the type of snagging hook that has the weight molded onto it. I don’t like those.

I prefer a large 9/0 or 10/0 Mustad or Eagle Claw hook tied about 18″ to 24″ above the sinker.

How Do You Tie A Snagging Rig For Paddlefish?

There are many ways to tie a treble hook onto a line for snagging spoonbill. What is most important is that the treble hook remains inline with the sinker. If it is off-kilter, you’ll get poor hooksets, the line will twist a lot or you’ll simply miss setting the hook. Here’s a video showing one way to tie a snagging rig for Paddlefish.

Are Paddlefish Good To Eat?

Yes, they are. Although I do not prefer them, some people do like to eat them. I just find them kinda “Blah”. And it’s not because they were cleaned improperly. I’ve cleaned my share of those beasts.

Some people will put their fillets in buttermilk overnight. I’ve never understood that, but some people swear by it. I never noticed a difference when I tried it.

How Do You Clean Paddlefish?

You do have to be careful when cleaning them. Here’s a short video on how to clean Paddlefish.

Okay, you should now be set up and ready to get out there and snag some Oklahoma paddlefish! Let us know in the comments how you’ve done this year!

In this on-demand, technology-obsessed era, no-strings-attached sex seems easier to come by than ever. As you can probably imagine — or may know from personal experience — location is everything. Theoretically, you can hook up with a soon-to-be one-night stand anywhere, but according to Saucy Dates, a casual dating site, some locations are more popular than others, as far as the meeting location is concerned. In a recent survey of over 10,000 of their members, the found the best places to find a one-night stand.

'I think people like the idea of a one-night stand, as you can be more experimental and adventurous,' David Minns, Founder of Saucy Dates, tells Bustle. 'Additionally, many responders commented that they liked the excitement of someone new. If it doesn't work out, then nothing is lost — if it does, you have some experiences you can carry forward to a future relationship.'

Rachel Needle, Psy.D., licensed psychologist and certified sex therapist in West Palm Beach, FL, says there are definitely benefits of a one-night stand. 'It can be liberating and stress-free to have sex with someone with no expectations for where the relationship is going or what the emotional impact having sex will have on you or your partner,' she tells Bustle. 'Additionally, there are no expectations as far as performance goes, and this allows us to be more sexually free and take the pressure off that we often put on ourselves during sex. Also, one-night stands can serve as a great ego boost. It feels good to be able to have someone want to have sex with you solely based on your looks, charm, and the skills you have that night.'

But it's also important to be safe when it comes to casual sex, whether you're having sex with someone just once or hooking up with a friend with benefits. 'It is important that both parties are not drunk and are, therefore, able to consent and communicate about the hookup,' Dr. Needle says. 'In addition, remember to protect yourself as much as possible from STIs (sexually transmitted infections) by using protection in every step of the 'hookup.'

So without further ado, here are the top 10 venues to find a one-night stand, according to Saucy Dates' findings.

Fifteen percent of respondents reported meeting their one-night stands on the street. Who knew?! This will definitely make you think twice the next time you take a walk, right?

Yep, the good-old standard, a bar, made second place with 14 percent of respondents. It tied with 'a party' for where to meet a one-night stand. I guess the two are similar: You're out with friends (or not), you're drinking (or not), and there are plenty of eligible men and women in your vicinity.

If you find yourself at a hotel — perhaps for a casual drink or perhaps as part of a business trip — casual sex may be in the picture, too. Eleven percent of respondents said hotels were a good place to find a one-night stand. Now you know!

Nine percent of those surveyed said nightclubs are good places to pick people up for a night of sex. When you think about it, it makes sense, since you may already be in close contact with strangers while dancing with them.

Have you ever gone to a wedding alone? If so, were you seated at the singles' table? Eight percent of Saucy Dates respondents said weddings are great venues to find a one-night stand. After all, romance is in the air (as well as an open bar!).

Need proof? A friend of mine had a one-night stand at a wedding, and he and the woman ended up dating for three years. So not all one-night stands end at one night!

Next time you're on the train or bus, look around: Your next one-night stand could be sitting right behind you. Seven percent of those surveyed said public transportation makes for a good place to find a one-night stand. Maybe the thought of this will make your morning commute more enjoyable.

Top 10 Places To Hook Up

You may know people who go to the gym not to work out, but to pick people up. Well, they're not alone. Saucy Dates found that five percent of people use the gym, as well as museums, for more than the free weights or art exhibits.

Eufaula Best Places To Hook Up In Atlanta

Neighbors make for an easy way to meet new people, including one-night stands. Four percent of respondents said so, and it's not surprising. Plus, you already have mutual friends, which means you may trust that your soon-to-be one-night stand is a legit person you have a built-in level of comfort with versus a total stranger.

The next time you're shopping, you may be shopping for more than food or clothes. You may be asking someone's advice about fruit or a sale item one minute, and then find yourself at their apartment the next. Three percent of people said they found one-night stands this way. Who knew talking about tomatoes (or some other seemingly benign thing) could lead to so much more?

Concerts and online dating (dating apps and sites) came in 10th place as venues to find a one-night stand, with two percent of respondents choosing them. Is anyone else in shock about dating apps and sites coming in 10th place? Wow.

Overall, did any of the locations to find a one-night stand surprise you? 'The two biggest venue shocks had to be online dating and the street,' Minns says of the findings. 'The image that dating apps and sites have generated a hookup culture doesn't seem to fit in our findings — longer-term casual relationships appear to be the norm, which can then develop further. Also, the street coming out as number one was a total surprise. But, in reflection, it seems to make perfect sense. Maybe we will see more people trying this technique.'

I'm curious, too, if more people will try to pick up more one-night stands on the street. In any case, the above definitely makes you think twice about some of the one-night stand meeting locations, that's for sure!
